Sanibel Island beach conditions

World-class shelling and leashed dogs are welcome.

Sanibel Island is in Lee County, Florida, on the Gulf coast.

Dogs on leashes up to eight feet long are welcome across Sanibel Island, a Lee County barrier island reached by causeway from the mainland. City lots at Bowman's, Gulfside and the Lighthouse charge five dollars an hour. The shelling is famous enough that the bent-over hunting posture has a local name, the Sanibel stoop. Captiva Beach is under four miles north and Fort Myers Beach fourteen miles south.

Where these readings come from

Tide predictions come from NOAA station Captiva Island (Gulf side, Blind Pass) (8725383).

Weather and marine forecasts come from the National Weather Service at Page Field (KFMY).

Red tide readings come from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission monitoring map.

Red tide at Sanibel Island

This part of the Gulf coast, from Pinellas down through Collier, is where blooms have concentrated most in the past, and Lee County sits at its southern edge. The alga responsible, Karenia brevis, tends to build into a bloom through late summer. Because red tide spreads unevenly, Sanibel Island can see different conditions than Captiva Beach less than four miles north. See today's statewide red tide status.
